A moral panic, the Satanic Panic was an anti-satanist hyper-defensive reaction succeeding the anti-cultism of the 1980s. It stemmed from the late 1980s to the 1990s, originating in the United States and spreading to the United Kingdom primarily, before being squelched by civil authorities working together with folklorists, sociologists and journalists to reveal the actual activities of the alarmists.

Several factors emphasized the intensity and duration of this witch hunt, including the publication of the book "Michelle Remembers", the showcasing of the subversion ideology on talk shows like that of Geraldo Rivera, and the existence of religious Satanism. This latter appears to had both a stimulating and a pacifying effect upon moral panics of this type.
