Witch hunt

A generic reference to a moral panic of the style seen during the European Witch Craze during which thousands of people (mostly women, it seems) were burned, hung, or killed, after terrible torture. The fear-based search for a nefarious subversive in our midst has driven packs of weapon-wielding vigilantes to suspect all, particular those unfamiliar to our kith and kin.
