ANTON LAVEY - b04-11-30 Howard Stanton Levey, aka Anton Szandor LaVey, d10-29-97, co-founder CoS

"I took up satanism not out of desperation, but out of logic. I rebelled, not but because of a religious or repressive childhood."
-- Michelle Carr and Elvia Lahman, "Velvet Hammer" Souvenir Programme, 9/11/97, "Anton LaVey"

"'Satan is a symbol, nothing more,' LaVey says. 'Satan signifies our love of the worldly and our rejection of the pallid, ineffectual image of Christ on the cross.'"
-- Walt Harrington, Washington Post Magazine, 2/24/86, "Anton LaVey: America's Satanic Master of Devils, Magic, Music and Madness", quoting Anton LaVey.

"'[Those who murder in the name of Satan such as Manson and Ramirez] are not Satanists,' says LaVey, eyes closed, voice a whisper. 'They are deranged.'"
-- Harrington, quoting Anton LaVey; Ibid. 2/24/86

"I mean Satanic in the sense of a philosophical concept, a realm, or a state of being that would best be described as a lifestyle, an outlook, an attitude, as opposed to a Gothic stage set which is what most people consider when the word "Satanic" is mentioned."
-- Eugene Robinson, 'Birth of Tragedy: the God Issue', No. 4 11/86 - 01/87

"As far as modern music I'm all for bands doing things for the cause of Satanism: Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, the Reverend Horton Heat. I'm as supportive as I can get with these people."
-- Carr/Lahman, Ibid. 9/11/97

"I took up Satanism not out of desperation but logical dismay that there were so many short-sighted people around me. I thought, acted, and thereupon found myself removed. And lo and behold, I was a Satanist. A prideful outcast. If the "just," the "good," the "righteous" were exemplified by the cowering ones, I wanted no part of them.

"My brand of Satanism is the ultimate conscious alternative to herd mentality and institutionalized thought. It is a studied and contrived set of principles and exercises designed to liberate individuals from a contagion of mindlessness that destroys innovation. I have termed my thought "Satanism" because it is most stimulating under that name. Self-discipline and motivation are effected more easily under stimulating conditions. Satanism means "the opposition" and epitomizes all symbols of nonconformity. Satanism calls forth the strong ability to turn a liability into an advantage, to turn alienation into exclusivity. In other words, the reason it's called Satanism is because it's fun, it's accurate, and it's productive."

-- Anton LaVey, "The Devil's Notebook", Feral House, 1992, introduction; pp. 9-10.
