FAQ: "What is the history of (the) Baphomet?" scratch@gladstone.uoregon.edu "Mr. Scratch": |>The pentagram did not come to symbolize Paganism as a movement (indeed, |>there was no "movement" at all) until the advent of Gerald Gardner in th e |>1940's. He lifted the image (an old Pythagorean symbol) from Levi, who |>(in the 19th Century) designed not only a 2-point down Pentagram, but a |>1-point down one as well -- the Baphomet, illustrated with the head of |>the Goat of Mendes. It is an image that PREDATES Gardener, and both the |>Neo-Pagan movement and the symbol he chose to represent it. Gardner was more fond of 1-point up pentagrams, I hear, though apparently there are some 'inverts' associated with 2nd-Degree Initiates. Richard Stuart : |I thought the Knights Templar were the first to use the Baphomet, |which would predate Eliphas Levi also? Payne Knight Webber or whoever he was (Sir Francis Payne Knight, _Worship of Priapus_ or something like that) mentions the "Mahomet" and includes this as related to the Knights Templar. Some associate this with a head, and indeed within Western magical tradition there is discussion of the construction of heads for divinatory purposes. This may have connections to Celtic skull-worship or the story of Bran and his prophesying head for all I know. :> There are many rumors also of a conspiracy between the Templars and the Sufis, who are sometimes said to have converted them to Muhammadism (Islam). Church of Satan folks have the Mendesian Goathead in the center of their pentacle they call 'the Baphomet'. it is also surrounded by 5 Hebrew letters (LOTAN or something similar) which appears to imply or translate to the Biblical 'Leviathan'. nocTifer tyagi@houseofkaosabyss.com -------------------------- -- Ensure my response - CC public replies to email http://www.hollyfeld.org/~tyagi/nagasiva.html (emailed replies may be posted) check: http://www.paranoia.com/coe/
